- Food preferences
Offer foods the client likes. Take into account preferences for seasoning and mealtimes, and avoid foods the client dislikes.
- Swallowing difficulties
Does the texture of the food affect swallowing? Does the client have reflux symptoms?
- Dental problems
Dry mouth and other dental or oral issues can make eating difficult.
- Needs help with eating
Alongside physiological reasons, cognitive decline may make it difficult for the client to eat independently.
- Diseases
Pain, gastrointestinal symptoms and many illnesses reduce appetite, e.g. dementia, asthma, COPD, heart disease, liver failure, kidney failure and diabetes. Assess whether the client would benefit from nutritional supplements.
